The Global Biodiversity Data Viewer 1.0
The Global Biodiversity Data Viewer (GBDV) is a web-based tool from the European Commission’s Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity (KCBD). It delivers country-level biodiversity profiles using authoritative global data to generate over 50 harmonized indicators aggregated in 14 factsheets. These indicators are vital for assessing progress toward the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework's (GBF) 2030 targets and 2050 goals.
The GBDV aims to solve a critical challenge regarding fragmented and inaccessible biodiversity data, enabling end-users to have a general overview of the progress by countries towards global targets like protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030. By leveraging open-access global spatial data, it provides key metrics for tracking status and trends relevant to international environmental agreements. By presenting spatially explicit biodiversity indicators in a clear and actionable format, it strengthens the capacity of policymakers, scientists, and civil society to evaluate progress, identify gaps, and prioritise interventions. Conversely, from the many indicators proposed by the GBDV, only a few currently fill the reporting needs of the GBF, highlighting current challenges in monitoring global progress for most targets. The GBDV is also expected to reflect the broader capacity to report on the overall progress made.
The platform also includes a mapping tool for users to easily combine, visualize, and share essential information. Supported by extensive documentation and a tutorial, the GBDV offers transparent, regularly updated data to strengthen global biodiversity policy and environmental diplomacy.
It is the main objective of this report to introduce the potential end-users to this tool and guide them in their first steps when using this platform, as well as to provide them with a well-documented section on the indicators presented and of their underlying datasets.
