Clean Energy Technology Observatory: Ocean Energy in the European Union - 2025 Status Report on Technology Development, Trends, Value Chains and Markets
Ocean energy is recognised within the European Energy Union as a fundamental research and development priority to meet the 2050 climate and energy objectives. The European Green Deal included ocean energy among the essential technologies to support the transition to climate neutrality. This report provides an updated assessment of ocean energy technologies, focusing on tidal and wave energy progress achieved through EU-funded research up to the end of 2024, aligned with SET Plan targets. It offers a comprehensive analysis covering technology status and deployments, value chain dynamics, and the EU’s market position and competitiveness within the global ocean energy sector. The report also identifies potential bottlenecks and risks that could hinder the achievement of the targets set out in the European Green Deal.
