A dataset of bilateral financial stocks and flows
Finflows is a quarterly dataset of domestic and bilateral financial stocks and flows covering around 300 reporting areas, including individual economies worldwide and country aggregates, from
1999Q4 onwards. The dataset disaggregates financial positions by reporting area, counterpart area, institutional sector, counterpart sector and financial instrument, and is fully aligned with current international statistical standards. It is constructed from publicly available statistics through a hierarchical integration of ECB Quarterly Sectoral Accounts, Eurostat National Accounts and Balance of Payments, ECB Balance Sheet Items and Securities Holdings Statistics, and the IMF Coordinated Portfolio and Direct Investment Surveys, with specialised treatments for unlisted equity and other instruments lacking direct bilateral reporting. Relative to its 2022 predecessor, the dataset introduces whom-to-whom detail on domestic exposures, expanded sectoral granularity within the financial sector, and an automated production pipeline enabling regular updates. The resulting infrastructure supports macroeconomic surveillance, financial stability and network analysis of cross-border spillovers, and assessment of EU financial integration in the context of the Savings and Investment Union.
