Policy advisors and regulatory bodies around the world assess the environmental effects of chemical substances in various sectors (e.g., industrial use, agriculture, and health care). Critical in this process is the evaluation of ecotoxicological, environmental fate and exposure data, where a decision to include or exclude a study may have considerable consequences for the outcome of the assessment. In some cases, this outcome may be the difference in concluding whether or not a substance poses an unacceptable risk, affecting subsequent decisions on marketing authorisation, discharge limits, or risk management measures. This short commentary makes some recommendations to peer reviewers of journal articles. It is also a call to journal editors to play their part in promoting these recommendations.
