Recent European energy policies are increasing the importance of wind energy, especially when combined with battery energy storage systems (BESS). Traditionally, wind producers set day-ahead bids using expected power generation, assuming a risk-neutral position. This paper proposes an alternative bidding method for hybrid wind-BESS systems, examining whether BESS flexibility can justify more aggressive, quantile-based day-ahead bids. The approach relies on the BESS’ ability to correct forecast errors in real time. We introduce a two-stage “quantile-adaptive” strategy that dynamically adjusts BESS output to balance the quantile-driven day-ahead position while capturing additional revenues from intraday balancing markets. The method accounts for wind uncertainty and BESS state of charge. Using Belgian power grid data from 2023 and 2025, we evaluate the strategy’s profitability in both high- and low-wind years.
