On the risk of reversal of carbon farming projects
cover
The Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) regulation (EU-2024/3012) aims at developing a voluntary carbon (C) market for the EU, generating a new ‘green busi-ness model’. Carbon farming activities’ can contribute to land resilience and climate change mitiga-tion potential. The contribution to climate mitigation de-pends on the ability to ensure the perma-nence and integrity of the carbon credits The concept of a buffer pool, a reserve of carbon credits set aside to account for po-tential risks of project failure, has been in-troduced in the CRCF. We provide practical recommendations for the development of a science-based risk assessment and buffer pool quantification. We provide a pan European estimate of the buffer pool for agricultural and soil organic carbon removals and afforestation
