Absolute and Relative Ranking Approaches for Comparing and Communicating Industrial Accidents.
In this paper, a new method of scaling by means of the relative ranking of the values of the quantitative measures describing such events is presented. While the immediate objective of an absolute ranking type of scale is communicating risk related significance of accidents, the relative ranking approach serves primarily as accident analysis tool. After discussing general characteristics of accident gravity scales, it is shown that the new approach helps reducing weak points related to subjective assumptions included in existing approaches.
