This report presents some recent developments concerning the simulation of rigid bodies in the EUROPLEXUS code dedicated to vehicle crash applications. The developments are based on the previously existing SOLI model of rigid bodies.
First, automatic dimensioning is activated for the SOLI model. It is no longer necessary to indicate the number of rigid bodies, nodes, degrees of freedom and material points in the dimensioning part of the EPX input file. The presence of such dimensions is tolerated and processed in the old manner, in order to ensure compatibility with old input files.
Then, a formulation of the reconstruction of the motion of the rigid points alternative to and more convenient than the one originally adopted in the SOLI model is presented. This new formulation is then exploited to set up a new procedure PLNK, alternative to the original PLIE method of SOLI, to deal with constraints applied to the rigid body.
Next, the SOLI model is extended to 2D space, a possibility that was not offered previously. This may be especially useful for small academic applications
and for verification against analytical solutions.
Finally, the SOLI model is ported to the parallel (MPI) version of EPX, which is fundamental in order to obtain efficient and accurate numerical simulations of complex applications in the domain of vehicle crash.
