Deliverable 3.1 Baseline for Biodiversity Descriptors
In the Blue2.3 project, the JRC has developed a comprehensive baseline simulation (2025–2050) to assess pressures affecting the marine environment and to support the potential revision of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The model evaluates cumulative impacts on biodiversity (D1), commercially exploited fish (D3), marine food webs (D4), and seafloor integrity (D6) by integrating climate change projections, nutrient load trends, and current fisheries regulations. Although the models are subject to constraints regarding data gaps and spatial resolution, they provide the best available evidence on future trends, considering the implementation of existing EU policies such as the Common Fisheries Policy and the Water Framework Directive.
