A comprehensive review of implementation, impact, and future developments in energy management interoperability
The Code of Conduct on interoperability of Energy Smart Appliances is an initiative launched jointly by Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) and Directorate-General Joint Research Centre (DG JRC or JRC) to achieve interoperability among energy-related products. As a result of a close coop-eration with industry, associations, academia, standardisation bodies and representatives from pub-lic institutions, a minimum set of requirements was established in its first version of: The Code of Conduct on energy management related interoperability of Energy Smart Appliances v.1.0. The scope included two types of devices: white goods and heating, ventilation, air conditioning devices, plus five use cases, or demand flexibility services. The semantic interoperability described in this document is based on the Smart Application Reference, or SAREF, ontology. This first version [1] was officially launched in April 2024, when eleven relevant manufacturers signed its commitments. This report offers an evaluation after one year of this official implementation, while presenting tangible results, highlighting the immediate deployment of these products for end customers. It also pro-vides an overview of the ongoing development of version 2.0, which includes additional products and services.
