Report of the EURL FCM proficiency test FCM-25/02
The outcomes of the proficiency test FCM-25/02 on bisphenols in aqueous ethanol 50:50 (v/v) indicated solid analytical capability across most laboratories submitting results. The exercise assessed readiness for enforcing Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) and potential future legislative measures on additional bisphenols with carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic (CMR) or endocrine-disrupting (ED) classifications. Bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol E (BPE), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol S (BPS) and 2,2-bis(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-4-methylpentane were included in the test item. Laboratories were required to report concentrations in µg L⁻¹, expanded uncertainties and methodological information, with performance evaluated through z and zeta scores and uncertainty assessment. Participation was overall satisfactory, with nearly thirty laboratories providing data and employing different chromatographic and mass-spectrometric techniques. Sixteen National Reference Laboratories (NRL) and thirteen Official Control Laboratories (OCLs) submitted results. BPA was quantified by all participants, and detection capability met the 1 µg kg⁻¹ requirement of Regulation (EU) 2024/3190. Reporting rates progressively declined for less common analytes, with the lowest submission observed for 2,2-bis(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-4-methylpentane. Nevertheless, when results were submitted, performance across analytes remained strong, with satisfactory scoring ranging from 80 % to 96 % of participants.
