Fair summer crop yields expected, except in the west
Mixed weather conditions prevailed during the summer, leading to a contrasting yield outlook for summer crops. Persistent drought in the west and rainfall deficits in parts of the centre resulted in below-average yields, while fair to positive yields are expected elsewhere, supported by timely water supply and the absence of severe thermal stress.
For winter crops, the generally drier- and warmer-than-usual weather in June did not significantly change crop conditions, matching the overall positive yield outlook reported in the June edition of this bulletin. However, rain in July delayed harvesting and deteriorated crop quality.
Following a delayed sowing campaign for summer crops due to locally dry and cold weather in spring, a reduction in soybean area was observed. In the west and parts of the centre, crops delayed in development faced rainfall shortages together with above-average temperatures, resulting in suboptimal vegetative growth. Elsewhere, crop conditions remained fair to positive, mainly due to abundant rainfall in July. The impact of rain deficit in August is expected to be limited.
Considering the spatial distribution of production areas, slightly above-average yields are forecast for grain maize and sunflower, while, for soybean, mainly grown in the west, yields are expected to be below average at the country level. Because of this and the slightly increased areas of grain maize and sunflower, the production for both grain maize and sunflower is expected to be fair, while soybean production is expected to fall well below the five-year average.
