HISDAC-NL consists of gridded data representing historical, decadal estimates of residential and non-residential building density and built-up surface from 1900 to 2020, as well as gridded building construction year statistics such as the earliest and the mean building construction year per grid cell, and the period of maximum growth of the built stock. HISDAC-NL has been derived from open building footprint data source attributed with construction year information. Data are enumerated at 50 m and 100 m resolution, and are available in three different spatial reference systems, aligned to existing country-level data (LGN 2022 / Amersfoort), to European data (Eurostat/GISCO LAEA grid), and to global gridded data (GHSL Mollweide Equal Area grid). HISDAC-NL complements existing historical settlement data for the United States (HISDAC-US) and for Spain (HISDAC-ES), facilitating long-term settlement analyses. Moreover, HISDAC-NL can be employed as training and reference data for historical or multi-temporal settlement data production efforts, and supports data-driven urban planning and policy making by making large volumes of building footprint data available as planning-relevant, spatio-temporal variables in analysis-ready, gridded data formats.
