HIGHLIGHTS
- Water is a fundamental resource for food and energy security, environment and human health.
- Assessing resilience can combine the evolution of water scarcity as well as the quality of water, particularly related to pollution. Life Cycle Assessment-based models can support a broader understanding of the water resilience of EU production and consumption systems.
- An assessment of four water resilience-related impact categories reveals that, when considering an EU domestic footprint (within EU borders), impacts are declining, while those associated with consumption footprint (which includes trade as well) are worsening. This signals a leakage of water-related impacts along the supply chain to other world regions.
