Case studies on strategic autonomy of wood products and dietary shifts
This report presents a parameterized what-if workflow for examining European Union bioeconomy land-system trade-offs. The workflow is illustrated through two storylines (1) wood-products trade exposure, and (2) dietary transition. The analytical platform used to inform the two storylines links aspects of biomass supply, demand, trade, production factors, and ecosystem context. It can be understood in the abstract as a system of accounts, queried as a datacube, exercised as a model. The results of the analysis show how explicit assumptions propagate across domains and where policy choices create tensions between domestic production, external dependency, input pressures and safeguard constraints. The report also discusses possible trade-off solution sets.
