Strengthening strategic autonomy resilience and resource security
Biotechnology is one of the Commission’s key priority areas, alongside defence, artificial intelligence and digitalisation. It is recognised as a technology that can strengthen Europe’s industrial base, support innovation and public health, and help address environmental sustainability and societal challenges. This priority is reflected in the Competitiveness Compass [1], which builds on the Draghi report [2] and places innovation, decarbonisation and resilience at the centre of the EU agenda. The focus on life sciences and biotechnology as areas with strong future potential is now being translated into concrete initiatives, notably the European Biotech Act [3] and the Life Sciences Strategy [4] for Europe.
