Recent trends and hidden divides in the European social landscape
‣ The ABSPO project has delivered the first consistent and cross-country comparable measure of absolute monetary poverty in the EU.
‣ Recent absolute poverty estimates range from 2% to 43% across Member States, displaying substantial regional divides that headline AROPE indicators largely overlook.
‣ Over the past decade, absolute poverty declined from 20% to 11.7%, lifting more than 30 million EU citizens out of financial insufficiency – a major success of upward convergence.
‣ Grounded in actual living costs, ABSPO thresholds offer a suitable benchmark and practical policy tool for assessing the adequacy of minimum wages, incomes and social benefits.
