Young citizens general image, perception and intentions towards the agricultural sector as a professional career
Poland is characterized by a less severe situation regarding the aging profile of their farming population when compared to other countries in the EU. Approximately 1 % of farms are managed by individuals under 25 years old, and 21 % by those under 40 (compared to 12 % in the overall EU), while 14 % of farmers are over 65. These numbers suggest that efforts to attract new young farmers have been made by the National and European Authorities, despite the participation of the youngest population remains low in the agricultural sector.
Based on 885 young respondents (18-40 years old) from Poland we identify their current perception of agriculture and willingness to pursue a professional career in farming. Results are analyzed considering place of residence (urban or rural) and whether they have family members already engaged in agriculture.
