This report examines how advanced materials can reduce dependence on critical raw materials in passenger vehicles and identifies the associated research and innovation needs. The seven portfolios link materials to driver-assistance sensing, connectors and capacitors, structural steels, lightweight castings, thermal management and exhaust after-treatment. For 62 of the 91 named options, the lowest reported technology readiness level is 7 or above, which indicates technical maturity but not suitability for every vehicle application. No universal substitute was identified: the most suitable options depend on the function, and some replace a material while others reduce its use or support reuse and recovery. For many mature options, the remaining needs concern reliability testing, vehicle integration and manufacturing capability; less-mature options require further development, and supply, safety and circularity trade-offs must also be considered.
