The paper provides a description of the experimental techniques which can be used for the dynamic testing of structures or structural elements. The description focuses on earthquake testing of civil engineering structures. The available techniques are summarized, and their advantages and limitations are discussed. In particular, the pseudodynamic test method as implemented at the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment is described. The problem of the selection of the most appropriate testing technique for each problem to be studied is addressed.
