The projects (REM, ECURIE, EURDEP, etc.) of the JRC/EI Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring Group are dealing with online information systems, which are interconnected to international networks. This thesis has investigated the advantages and disadvantages of the TCP/IP-based computer communication as the data exchange channel for the radiological information systems and emergency networks. Programs and procedures have been written to monitor and "traceroute" the ftp and Internet communication and SMTP-based public email. The Internet is growing rapidly, but the information exchange in a nuclear emergency situation should be based on point-to-point connection.
