On-Line Runaway Detection in Batch Reactors Using Chaos Theory Techniques.
Nonlinear time series analysis using delay coordinate embedding has been applied to experimental temperature data from a batch chemical reactor with the aim to detect the onset of the thermal excursion of the reaction mass. The early warning detection criterion, i.e. when the divergence becomes positive on a segment of the reaction path, developed in the first part of this study, has been applied to simulated and experimental data. The results demonstrate the validity of such approach opening a new route, in between the simple use of measured variables and the complex model-based state reconstruction techniques, to assess in advance hazardous situations in chemical reactors.
