Abstract: The impurity-yttrium interactions have been studied for iron oxidation at 700C. Yttrium implanted specimens exhibit a better oxidation behaviour compared with blank specimens. On pure iron Fe-0.054wt%C alloy the beneficial effect is attributed to the Fe2Y04 formation. With manganese containing alloys (Fe-0.2wt%Mn), the protective effect of yttrium is attributed to the YMn03 formation.
