Measurement of the Light Absorption of Aquatic Particles Retained on Filtres: Determination of the Optical Pathlength Amplification by the "Transmittance-Reflectance" Method.

cover
The optical pathlenght amplification (Beta factor), induced by multiple scattering in quartz filters used for light absorption measurements of aquatic particles, has been measured by the Transmittance-Reflectance(T-R) method, for algal species with cell diameter in the range from 1 to 5 microns. The Beta factors obtained showed a much lower dispersion than observed in similar measurements carried out by the standard transmittance method, suggesting that this could be due, at least in part, to the incomplete account of the scattering losses taken by the latter method. An experimental test has verified that the Beta factor expression derived from measurements carried out by the T-R method on an algal culture, is also applicable to detrital particles.
