Owing to their relatively high environmental persistence the applcation of triazine herbicides during years of unlimited use in agricultural weed control has led to the accumulation in various eco-systems throughout the European Union, thus building up large solid residues which moved towards the ground water streams, creating serious problems to drinking water quality in some areas. While a lot of attention was paid to the elimination of possible dangers arising from the distribution of atrazine and simazine in the environmental compartments this was not the case for other s-triazines like prometryn and prometrone.
