Effect of Sea Breeze on Air Pollution in the Greater Athens Area. Part 2. Analysis of Different Emission Scenarios.
In the greater Athens Area, summertime sea-breeze regimes are frequently associated with severe photo-smog episode. In this paper, the study of one of those photo-smog episodes (September 14th, 1997, MEDCAPHOT campaign) is presented. The goal of the study is to better identify and understand the non-linear processes giving rise to high ozone concentrations, in order to help regulatory actions for the abatement strategy. Several different emissions scenarios are analyzed. The most important emission sources are found to be in the Athens basin and the re-circulation of pollutants during several days with sea-breeze regime is shown to increase the photo-smog formation.
