Policy makers lack realistic assessments of biomass resources, whilst on a local scale exploitation of biomass resources is hampered by uncertainty about which type of biomass and conversion technology is the most suitable in particular areas. GIS have already proved their capability to assist in resolving spatially-determined issues and are widely used in applications such as nature conversion, regional planning, transport cost analysis, etc. In the field of bioenergy, GIS has still not been fully exploited, though it opens new possibilities. We have applied the existing European-wide statistical and GIS data in order to assess the theoretical and technical potential of straw from wheat and barley in the 25 European Union countries and 2 Accession Countries.
