Isotope Ratio Measurement by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) and Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry (GDMS) (invited review)
The basic principles of secondary ion mass spectrometry and glowdischarge mass spectrometry have been shortly revisited. The applications of both techniques as exploited for the isotope ratio measurements in several matrices have been reviewed. Emphasis has been given to research fields in expansions such as solar system studies, medicine, biology, environment and nuclear forensic.
The characteristics of the two techniques are discussed in terms of sensitivity and methodology of quantification. Considerations on the different detection possibilities in SIMS are also presented.
