An Investigation of LD Diesel Vehicle Exhaust at VELA by Using the Single Particle Analysis and Sizing System (SPASS)
During February and March 2004 several investigations of LD (Light Duty) diesel vehicle exhaust were made at the JRC Vehicle Emissions Laboratory (VELA) by using the Single Particle Analysis and Sizing System (SPASS). In addition, filter samples from the car exhaust were taken. During the use of the mobile SPASS at VELA approximately 32.000 single particles mass spectra have been obtained under the different fuels (diesels) and dynamic / static test cycles were performed. First results from the SPASS show that when the vehicle exhaust are compared to nitrogen / nitrate / sulfate / ammonia compounds and more carbon-clusters / CN / calcium compounds, but not striking difference of mass spectra obtained under the different "driving" conditions. More spectral details will be presented at the conference, where also a comparison with the filter samples will be shown. To summarize: in this presentation the single particle data from LD diesel vehicle exhaust will be shown, compared to other data and finally compared to single particle data obtained during field campaigns in urban areas. The implications of these recent results will be discussed.
