SDI: from Spatial Data to Service-Driven Infrastructure
The paper considers some key research issues arising from the shift taking place between typical current SDIs (distributed data + local processing), towards a fully service driven environment in which processing is also distributed after brokering among competing services in an open market. Technical issues include orienting research towards the interoperability of services rather than just data, including issues of performance, trustworthiness, methodological rigour, and satisficing fit with user requirements. Socio-economic research issues need to focus in particular on the impact of such new services on regional economics, including issues of location, innovation, and competitiveness, which are currently under-researched.
