Putting PV on the map. Internet tools for solar resource assessment in Europe
Solar energy is a key factor, determining electricity produced by photovoltaic (PV) systems. Successful integration of solar energy technologies into the existing energy structures is also determined by knowledge of the geographical and temporal aspects of the solar resource. The EC JRC has assigned a project team to develop a new high-resolution solar radiation database using the GIS technology for solar energy assessments in Europe (Photovoltaic GIS, PV-GIS). The web site was set-up with interactive tools to increase the awareness and clarify the impact of the introduction of solar electricity into our daily lives. The web site, database and the applications are accessible at http://re.jrc.cec.eu.int/pvgis/pv/index.htm.
