The present study compares shortly the factors influencing the degradation of the historical city centres on the one hand and the dynamic developments of the urban fringe on the other hand, taking as case studies the cities of Bogotá (Colombia) and Leipzig (Germany). The efforts of both cities to revitalize their historical city centres through adequate measures are investigated. Among these, urbanistic and environmental improvements of the city centres as well as the disencouragement of spatial processes at the urban fringe that affect negatively the development of the historical city centre have to be mentioned. The study comes to the conclusion that despite the two cities are very different, there are parallels that offer general perspectives for the revitalization of historical city centres, based especially on the civil spirit of the inhabitants and the function of the historical city centre as intellectual and cultural centre of the city.
