Failure Analysis of Spent Nuclear Fuel Canister Mock-Up at Iso-Static Pressure
This report describes the design, pre-test analysis, test results and post-test analysis of two large-scale tests of copper cast-iron canisters loaded in hydrostatic compression until failure. The tests showed that the failure was via plastic collapse and that there is a safety factor 3 against loads that may occur from ice-age. The detailed post-test analysis of components revealed that defects could propagate by stable tearing but did not become through-cracks before plastic collapse. It also showed that cracking may occur in region with compressive stresses.
