The paper assesses the intrinsic limitations in modelling surface UV radiation using satellite data. These are related to the use of a plane-parallel radiative transfer scheme, the spatial and temporal resolution of the satellite data. The method consists in using a 3D radiative transfer code and synthetic cloud cover. The results from the 3D code are compared with those of the scheme used in practice for mapping the surface UV radiation.
