A Joint Initiative for Harmonization and Validation of Land Cover Datasets
An international initiative aimed at harmonization and validation of existing and future land cover datasets is needed to support operational earth observation of land. The goal is to overcome current limitations of land cover dataset compatibility and comparability, and their unknown accuracy that significantly hinders applications. In their recent efforts //the Land Cover Implementation Team of GOFC-GOLD and the CEOS Group on Calibration and Validation//have explored and provided the methodological and organizational resources to foster such an international cooperation. The approaches are described in this paper including an introduction of the FAO Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) as common land cover language and legend translation device.
