The work on the Best Available Technique Reference Document (BREF) for the manufacture of Organic Fine Chemicals (OFC) is completed. The BREF has passed the Information Exchange Forum and is available as finalised BREF in the internet [1], pending for adoption by the European Commission. The following article presents the waste water related results. Besides prevention and minimisation strategies, the best available techniques include decision criteria for the pre-treatment of waste water streams, especially for refractory organic loadings, and emission levels associated with the application of the best available techniques for the biological treatment of the total waste water.
