The political and scientific process of the development of the European Soil Thematic Strategy (STS) takes part among researchers as well as politicians since the communication of the European Commission in 2002. The focus of the paper is in development and current status of the STS. Examples from the JRC work show problems and solutions to implement soil data and soil protection assessments at different scales.
