Certification of Reference Materials for Engineering Applications
Harmonisation of materials testing approaches is a prerequisite for global comparability of data on materials properties. Because the development of standardised procedures is often not sufficient to obtain mutual confidence in measurement results, an increasing number of laboratories and companies is choosing to work under particular accreditation schemes. Recent developments in the accreditation of materials testing laboratories have increased the significance of reference materials in general and certified reference materials in particular. This paper shows examples of certified reference materials (CRMs) produced at IRMM in the field of engineering materials. The Charpy impact test us used as an example to explain how CRMs can be used to assess measurement uncertainty.
