The paper reviews the spatial impact of many European policies, particularly in the field of the environment, and the growing importance of spatial data infrastructures to support policy analysis, monitoring, and reviewing. The proposal for an INSPIRE Directive is then introduced and its relevance for spatial planning underlined.
