The Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements produced certified calibrants for Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2. Therefore crystalline aflatoxins were purchased and their identity proven by 1H NMR, elemental analysis and LC-MS/MS. The purity was assessed by using 1H NMR, LC-DAD, LC/MS, TLC and DSC. Afterwards, the calibrants were prepared gravimetrically and the concentration was confirmed by two laboratories employing UV-spectrometry. In an additional study the homogeneity of the calibrants was demonstrated and the stability of the calibrants was assessed in a 12 month isochronous study? the certified values (~ 3µg/g) are based on the gravimetric preparation of the calibrants corrected by the purity of the toxins. The uncertainty (<3.5 %, k=2) of these values comprises contributions of the purity assessment, the gravimetric preparation as well as possible instability.
