Three possibilities for increasing the capability of the eddy-current metal detector are examined: time-domain methods, impedance spectroscopy and spatial distribution methods. As the existing devices are not suitable for humanitarian demining, we discuss the feasibility of an autonomous mapping system based on a low-cost inertial navigation unit. It is shown that, using existing technology, correction of drift by an independent sensor would be required.
