The safety of nuclear power plants is a primary concern of the European Union (EU) and its Member States. In the early 1990s, the European Union decided to take a prominent role in international efforts to help the New Independent States (NIS) and countries of Central Europe to ensure the safety of their nuclear reactors. One of the main priority for the nuclear safety programme in the NIS are given by the Council Regulation (EC, Euratom) No 99/2000 such as supporting the promotion of an effective nuclear safety culture in line with the principles of the Convention on nuclear safety, in particular through continuous support for regulatory bodies and, at the plant level, through on site-assistance, including equipment supplies, where such assistance is most needed. This presentation provides an overview of the European Commission TACIS and PHARE programs that address safety concerns and challenges related to I&C at NPPs. It also provides examples and lessons learned how some I&C projects were implemented for a particular NPP design, and finally presentation of TACIS/PHARE database.en_GB
