Residual Stress Analysis by Neutron Diffraction: Current Possibilities and Outlook to the Future - Involvement of JRC-IE in the Context of the ERA

cover
Neutron diffraction is presented in this paper as a very powerful method for measuring residual stresses in crystalline material components. The paper presents the underlying principles for the application of the method. The evolution of this relatively young technique over the past 25 years is shown and developments in instrumentation and measurement possibilities are sketched, whereby a brief look into the future is taken. The neutron diffractometers employed at the High Flux Reactor of the JRC are described and some examples of residual stress measurements performed here are given. In some cases a comparison with numerical predictions is made. Finally, the role of the JRC as a facilitator of European and international collaboration in this research area is explained. The JRC has provided significant contributions to the standardization of the method, and for several years it has managed the European Network on Neutron Techniques Standardization for Structural Integrity (NET).
