Fino a che età le Foreste Accumulano Carbonio?
A recent paper published in Science (Zhou et al. 2006) reports n unexpectedly high accumulation of carbon in the top 20-cm soil layer in a preserved old-growth forest in southern China during 24 years. This finding is discussed in relation to the traditional “ecological equilibrium” concept and compared to other recent results and hypotheses on this issue. Given the importance of quantifying and understanding better the capacity of accumulating carbon by old-growth forest in the context of the global carbon cycle and climate change, future research on this issue is clearly needed.
