The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Working Group for Standardization of Thyroid Function Tests (WG-STFT) has initiated a project to develop a reference measurement system for free thyroxine in plasma or serum. In this paper, the WG is proposing a definition of the measurable quantity (measurand) with reference to the intended use of the result in medical decisions and consistent with current ISO, IUPAC and IFCC recommendations.
