Open Source Information Collection, Processing and Applications
This chapter describes recent progress in open-source information collection and processing, including whenever appropriate application examples. Application examples are oriented towards nuclear non-proliferation and include descriptions of state-of-the-art technologies and tools. Emphasis is put on Internet based information collection. The chapter starts with some considerations on open-source information and what are the features that make it so attractive for information analysis. This is followed by a section on information collection and the attention that needs to be paid to validation of the content. This leads the discussion to information analysis and the need for automated tools to process, augment and assist the analyst in her/his work. The last section discusses the use and limitations of open-source information and hints future research lines.
