A Brief Overview of Biomass-To-Liquid Fuels
The article aims to summarise the key findings of the JRC-IE report EUR 21745 / 2005 on the techno-economic aspects of the production of biomass-to-liquid fuels and their potential automotive applications in the EU by 2010 and beyond. The key conclusion of the article are the following:
1. Beyond 2010 BTL fuels can have a larger contribution to the security and diversity of
energy supply, the improvement of the transport fuel supply and the reduction of GHG
emissions at lower cost than conventional biofuels.
2. A number of factors, including ones that are not related to bioenergy and the energy sector in general, could act as barriers to the market penetration of BTL fuels.
