This paper gives an overview on the mechanical system and architecture of ALF-X, an innovative tele-robotics surgical system jointly developed by the Italian pharmaceutical company SOFAR spa and by the Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen of the EC-Joint Research Centre. ALF-X stands for “Advanced Laparoscopy through Force refleCTion”, and its objective is to provide a cost-effective, easy-to-use, modular and versatile tool to experienced surgeons in laparoscopy with advanced force sensing capabilities. The design of the presented robotics system results from a specific user and product-oriented approach.
