Investigating Applications for the 3D Design Information Verification System at Department of Energy Facilities in the United States

cover
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the European Commission's Joint Research Center (JRC) at Ispra have conducted a cooperative effort in investigating the capabilities of and the applications for the Three-Dimensional (3D) Design Information Verification System at Department of Energy (DOE) facilities in the United States. The work was performed under the technical cooperation agreement between DOE and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM). JRC has developed a 3D laser scanning system for design information verification that is currently being used by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The system is capable of creating 3D maps of rooms and objects and of identifying changes in positions and modifications with a precision on the order of millimeters. The hardware and software were made available to ORNL researchers, who conducted capability tests under various conditions. The results have been evaluated, and this report describes the findings of the experiments conducted by ORNL and identifies potential applications in the DOE Complex.
