Cotton is a very important industrial crop for many countries in the world. This fact has made cotton on of the main objectives of traditiona genetic improvement, and, in recent years, of biotechnology. This paper describes the global adoption of genetically modified (GM) cotton and reviews the existing relevant scientific literature on the economic performance of GM cotton in comparision with conventional varieties. The particular case of the EU regarding a potential uptake of GM cotton is overviewed.
